Learn to draft and sew both casual and formal shirts for gents.
In this Shirtmaking course, you will learn how to draft and sew both casual and formal gents shirts. You will learn to draft a basic causal summer shirt as well as a formal shirt. The pattern drafts will feature a collar with collar stand, double yoke, full button-up front and scooped narrow hem with your choice of casual short sleeves, or long sleeves with cuffs.
What you will learn...
• Extensive techniques; collar with stand, plackets, cuffs...
• Interfacing, pleats and easing in sleeves
• Take accurate measurements
• Draft out you pattern.
• Lay out your pattern & transfer markings on to your fabric
• Apply interfacing
• Assemble & attach collar with / without collar stand (with understitching and topstitching techniques)
• Construct shirt shell and topstitch double yoke
• Hemline details
• Attach front bands
• Assemble and set-in sleeves with ease (long sleeve is two-piece with cuff, or choose a short sleeve with hem)
• Buttonholes and buttons (how to mark, how to use a one-step-buttonhole foot, how to sew on a button correctly and on which side!
What to bring
• 9 to 11 x 1-2.5cm buttons
• 1 metre iron/fusible lightweight interfacing,
• 1.8 to 2.3 metres of light weight fabric,
• 1 metre fusible interfacing,
• Matching sewing machine thread
• Filled in bobbin
• Dressmakers pins
• Fabric marker / Tailors chalk
• Measuring tape
• Scissors
• Sewing machine needles
• Ruler, pen / pencil for drafting and
• A book to take notes if needed.
Suggested Fabric
You will be looking for light to medium weight woven fabrics. Cotton poplin, lawn, chambray, lightweight denim, oxford cotton and cotton shirting will all give a crisp finish, whilst linen, rayon, fine needlecord, brushed cotton, flannel and barkcloth will have a more casual feel. You could even try silk or chiffon for an extra special, dressed-up version. So take you pick as from the listed and get the fabric of your choice.
Who is the class for?
This course is suitable for intermediate level learners only. The classes are designed to help you build your sewing and drafting skills and learn advanced sewing & drafting with shirt-making techniques. You will need to have a sound knowledge of completely setting up and troubleshooting your sewing machine. You’ll need a good understanding of basic to Improvers level in garment construction and pattern drafting and a familiarity with footers as swell as sewing techniques such as topstitching, yokes and buttonholes.

Criteria: Completed my Improvers level sewing classes or have sound / basic level knowledge and Improvers level pattern drafting knowledge.
This class is open to ladies and gents. 16 to 18 year old can use their Creative Kids Vouchers to cover part of the fees.
