Introduction to Sewing

Never touched a sewing machine but always wanted to learn, or perhaps the last time you sewed was in High School and you need a refresher on threading the machine?
Taking our Beginner Sewing classes will get you to the beginner level in just 4 weeks! In this beginner class you will learn how to wind a bobbin, sew a straight line, and a variety of basic stitches to get you started on your sewing journey!

Location: Rooty Hill
Class Length: 4 x 2 hour sessions
Days - Wednesdays - In- studio
            Mondays - Online / Live

Here is what you will learn….

Get sewing machine confident
Starting right at the very beginning, learn everything you will need to use a sewing machine for the first time.
• Anatomy of a sewing machine
• Winding on a bobbin
• Threading a top loading sewing machine
• Threading a front-loading machine
• Sewing machine driving test
• Essential sewing tools
• Basic troubleshooting

Week 1 - Introduction to sewing

Dive into sewing with these basic skills
• How to measure correctly
• Choosing fabric
• Understanding patterns
• Adjusting patterns
• Preparing your fabric
• How to correctly cut out your fabric

Week 2 - Scrunchie & Envelope cushion cover

Scrunchie

This easy hair piece is a great intro to sewing
• Pinning and cutting out from a pattern
• Learn a simple way to sew a straight line
• Create a simple casing
• Finish off with elasticated scrunch

Envelope cushion cover

Make a pretty envelope cushion cover in your second project.
• Measure and cut out the cushion cover.
• Construct the cushion cover
• Create a simple opening for the insert
• Creating a double folded hem
• Sewing simple seams
• Tidying of seams
• Bagging out your cushion cover

Week 3 - Commercial sewing patterns 

• All about a commercial pattern 
• Increasing a size up
• Decreasing a size down  
• Fabrics prints 
• Fabric layout & Cutting


Week 4 - Pyjama Pants 

Make the perfect pair of pyjama set - a shorts with an elasticated waistband or a ribbon drawstring and a simple top. 
• Pin and cut out the pattern
• Learn a simple method of trouser construction
• Sew narrow double folded hems
• Finish off with an elasticated waist

• 500m spool of black & white thread / cotton
• Dressmaking Pins (Glass, Pearl, or Plastic head)
