STRING & NAIL ART COURSE

 

Course Duration: 4 Weeks

Class Length: 2 Hours per Week

Level: Absolute Beginners

Suitable for: Teens (12+), Adults & NDIS Participants

Discover the wonderful world of String & Nail Art! This hands-on beginner course introduces students to creating beautiful decorative artwork using timber boards, nails and colourful string.

Each week, students will complete a different project while gradually developing their confidence in measuring, nail placement, string wrapping and creative design.

WEEK 1 – STAR STRING ART

Project: Five-Point Star

Students will learn:

• Introduction to string and nail art

• Understanding the tools and materials required

• Safe handling of hammers and nails

• Preparing a timber board

• Transferring a simple star template onto timber

• Measuring and spacing nails evenly

• Basic string wrapping techniques

• Securing thread and finishing the artwork

WEEK 2 – HEART STRING ART

Project: Classic Heart

Students will learn:

• Transferring a curved design onto timber

• Understanding nail placement around curved outlines

• Maintaining consistent nail spacing

• Creating smooth curves using string

• Introducing a second colour

• Building string layers to create a fuller design

• Finishing and securing threads neatly

 

Completed Project: A colourful heart string art piece.

WEEK 3 – BALLOON STRING ART

Project: Single Balloon with String

Students will learn:

• Working with rounded shapes

• Transferring a balloon template onto timber

• Positioning nails around circular and curved outlines

• Creating a filled balloon using string

• Using contrasting colours

• Creating the balloon's hanging string

• Adding simple decorative details

• Finishing the artwork

Completed Project: A cheerful balloon string art piece.

WEEK 4 – CRESCENT MOON STRING ART

Project: Crescent Moon

Students will learn:

• Understanding crescent-shaped designs

• Transferring the moon template onto timber

• Positioning nails along inner and outer curves

• Creating a clean crescent outline

• Filling the crescent with string

• Combining colours for a decorative finish

• Securing and finishing their final project

• Preparing artwork for display

SUPPLY LIST

Students are required to bring their own supplies for this course.

Essential Materials:

• 4 × Timber boards (approximately 20 cm × 20 cm or similar size; one for each weekly project)

• Small hammer

• Sufficient panel pins or finishing nails (20–25 mm) for four projects

• Embroidery thread or craft string in assorted colours

• Printed templates for the Star, Heart, Balloon and Crescent Moon

• Carbon paper or tracing paper

• Masking tape

• Pencil

• Eraser

• Ruler

• Fine-tip permanent marker

• Small scissors or thread snips

• Needle-nose pliers (recommended)

• Fine-grit sandpaper

• Safety glasses

• Small container for storing nails and threads

 

Optional Decorative Materials:

• Metallic embroidery thread

• Glitter thread

• Glow-in-the-dark thread

• Acrylic paint or wood stain

• Paintbrush

• Clear acrylic sealer or varnish

• Decorative embellishments

• Hanging hardware

 

PLEASE NOTE:

Students should bring their supplies to each class. Timber boards may be prepared and decorated before attending, allowing more class time for learning and completing the string art projects.

 

WHAT STUDENTS WILL TAKE HOME

By the end of the course, each student will have created four beautiful handmade artworks:

Week 1 – Star

Week 2 – Heart

Week 3 – Balloon

Week 4 – Crescent Moon
