Designed for children aged 5–12 years, this hands-on course introduces young artists to the wonderful world of visual illusions.

Through drawing, shading, patterns and perspective, children will discover how artists create pictures that appear to move, bend, twist or pop right off the page!

From experimenting with wavy lines to drawing three-dimensional shapes and impossible objects, learners will develop their creativity, observation skills and artistic confidence.

With patient, step-by-step guidance, children can explore these exciting techniques at their own pace.

No previous drawing experience is necessary!

Week 1 — Wavy Lines & Amazing Patterns

Discover how simple lines can trick the eye!

Experiment with straight, curved and wavy lines to create exciting optical effects. Learn how repeating patterns can make drawings appear to bend, move or change shape.

Week 2 — 3D Shapes & Shadows

Make your drawings pop off the page!

Explore how shading, light and shadow can transform flat shapes into three-dimensional objects.

Practise drawing cubes, tunnels and other shapes that appear to have depth.

Week 3 — Impossible Objects

Can you draw something that couldn't exist in real life?

Discover the fascinating world of impossible objects and perspective tricks.

Experiment with unusual shapes and clever drawing techniques to create artwork that challenges what the eye sees.

Week 4 — My Optical Illusion Masterpiece

Bring everything together!

Plan, design and complete a larger optical illusion artwork using your favourite techniques from the course.

Add finishing details, colour and shading before preparing your masterpiece for display.

Children will proudly take home their completed artwork.

🧵 Supply List — What Learners Need to Bring

All learners must bring their own materials and equipment for this course.

Drawing Materials

• A4 or A3 drawing paper.
• Sketchbook or drawing pad.
• HB and 2B drawing pencils.
• Eraser.
• Pencil sharpener.
• Ruler.
• Black fine-tip markers.
• Black permanent fineliner suitable for paper.
• Coloured pencils in assorted colours.

Shading & Design Materials

• Additional graphite pencils for shading.
• Blending stump or suitable paper blending tool.
• Geometric shape templates or stencil ruler.
• Compass for drawing circles, with adult guidance where appropriate.

Final Project Materials

• A3 heavyweight drawing paper or suitable art card.
• Mounting card or sturdy backing board.
• Glue stick or suitable double-sided mounting tape.
• Folder for transporting artwork.

Additional Essentials

• Pencil case for organising drawing equipment.
• Protective apron.
• Water bottle and a small snack.

Important: Course fees do not include materials. Parents and carers are requested to organise the complete supply list before their child's first session.
