Over four weeks, you will learn the foundations of sewing and constructing hats while completing two different hat projects.

 

The course is designed to allow plenty of time to learn each technique, work through the construction process and achieve a beautiful, professionally finished result.

 

👒 WEEKS 1 & 2

Project 1 — Wide Brim Sun Hat

Begin your introduction to hat making by creating your own Wide Brim Sun Hat.

 

Across the first two weeks, you will learn:

• Introduction to different styles of hats

• Choosing suitable fabrics for hat making

• Reading and understanding hat patterns

• Measuring head size correctly

• Understanding grainlines and fabric layout

• Accurate pattern placement and cutting

• Applying interfacing and structure

• Sewing curved seams

• Crown construction

• Brim construction

• Sewing larger curved pieces

• Joining the crown and brim

• Neat topstitching

• Decorative stitching options

• Pressing and shaping techniques

• Creating clean, professional finishes

🧢 WEEKS 3 & 4

Project 2 — Newsboy / Baker Boy Cap

Build on the skills learned during Weeks 1 and 2 while creating a more structured Newsboy / Baker Boy Cap.

 

Across these two weeks, you will learn:

• Working with multi-panel hat patterns

• Accurately joining multiple panels

• Creating shape and volume

• Crown construction and shaping

• Constructing a structured peak/visor

• Attaching the peak to the cap

• Creating and attaching a lining

• Achieving a comfortable and accurate fit

• Professional finishing techniques

• Final shaping and pressing

 

You will also explore ways to personalise your hat, including:

• Simple pattern personalisation

• Decorative stitching

• Adding trims and finishing details

• Ribbons and bands

• Buttons and embellishments

• Bows or fabric flowers, if desired

• Creating a finish that reflects your individual style

More importantly, you will have developed an understanding of hat construction, fitting, shaping and finishing, giving you the foundational skills and confidence to continue exploring many more hat styles and designs at home.
