Course Overview.....

 

This hands-on Fabric Painting Course is designed for absolute beginners who want to develop confidence in surface design and textile decoration techniques.

Students will learn essential painting methods on fabric including colour mixing, brush control, motif design, stencil work, resist techniques, shading, outlining, and professional finishing.

By the end of the course, participants will complete multiple painted samples and at least two finished wearable or decorative textile projects, gaining the confidence to continue fabric painting independently, take commissions, or start a small creative business.

 

📚 Full 8-Week Course Structure

 

Week 1 — Introduction to Fabric Painting & Materials

 

• Understanding different fabric types (cotton, linen, blends)

• Introduction to fabric paints and mediums

• Tools, brushes and workspace setup

• Pre-washing and preparing fabric

• Basic brush control exercises

 

✅ Mini Practice: Lines, dots, strokes on cotton swatches

 

Week 2 — Colour Theory for Textile Design

 

• Primary, secondary and tertiary colours

• Mixing custom shades

• Opacity vs transparency on fabric

• Creating colour charts

 

✅ Mini Practice: Painted colour swatch sampler

 

Week 3 — Motif Drawing & Placement

 

• Simple floral and geometric motifs

• Transferring designs onto fabric

• Freehand vs traced designs

• Composition and spacing

 

✅ Mini Project: Painted motif sample panel

 

Week 4 — Stencilling & Block Effects

 

• Using ready-made stencils

• Creating DIY stencils

• Layering colours

• Repeat pattern basics

Week 5 — Shading, Highlighting & Blending

 

• Dry brush technique

• Gradient blending

• Creating depth in motifs

• Outline definition techniques

 

✅ Mini Practice: Floral shaded painting sample

 

Week 6 — Resist Techniques & Texture Effects

 

• Wax / tape / salt / texture effects

• Background design techniques

• Splatter and abstract painting

• Combining multiple techniques

 

✅ Mini Project: Decorative fabric art piece

 

Week 7 — Wearable Fabric Painting Project

 

• Designing placement for garments

• Painting on T-shirts / scarves / cushion covers

• Heat setting and paint fixation methods

• Preventing cracking and fading

 

✅ Major Project: Paint one wearable textile item

 

Week 8 — Final Project & Professional Finishing

 

• Planning full design layout

• Time management in creative projects

• Fixing mistakes and touch-ups

• Care instructions for painted fabrics

• Pricing and selling handmade painted textiles

 

✅ Final Project: Completed textile painting project

Fabric & Practice Materials

 

• 1 metre medium weight cotton fabric (calico recommended)

• Plain cotton tote bag OR cotton T-shirt OR cushion cover

• Scrap fabric pieces for practice

 

Paints & Mediums

 

• Fabric paints (brands easily available in Australia):

– Jo Sonja Textile Paint

– Mont Marte Fabric Paint

– Pebeo Setacolor

 

• Fabric medium (if using acrylic paints)

 

Brushes

 

• Flat brush (size 6 or 8)

• Round brush (size 1 or 2 for detailing)

• Medium round brush (size 4)

 

Design Tools

 

• Pencil

• Eraser

• Tracing paper or carbon paper

• Simple stencil set (optional)

 

Workspace Items

 

• Palette or paper plate

• Water container

• Paper towels / old cloth

• Plastic sheet or newspaper to protect table

 

Fixing & Finishing

 

• Household iron (for heat setting at home)
