Children's Sewing Classes

Sewing and dressmaking is an amazing skill for anyone to learn. Rather than it becoming a fading-away skill these days, why not give our younger generation an opportunity to learn it? This practical life skill in the long term could not only serve as a stress- buster in their busy lives but also see them sewing and altering their own clothes.

Please note the cost for this is term fee.

Learning Outcome - Creative Arts.
Ages - 5 to 13 years
Days - Thursdays
Time - 4 pm to 5:30 pm
Location - Rooty Hill

What is taught?

These classes are focused on providing children with a practical life skill. Children will learn the very basics of sewing and will work on one project each week. They will be encouraged to create an album with mini versions of every project they work on (optional).
Although I aim to complete one project a week for a child to take home, some projects might not be completed in the one session. As the child furthers her / his sewing skills they will be encouraged to do the next level projects.
After-school classes teaching sewing skills. Students work at their own pace through a curriculum of projects and learn:
Week 1 - Hand sewing techniques while working on the very first project.
Week 2 - Get to know your sewing machine. Learn about top and front loading sewing machines
Threading
Bobbin winding
Needle changing
Stitch lengths & tension
By the end of this class, children learn to sew a neat rolled hem.
Week 3 - Sew on practice sheets
The reverse stitch practice
Sew a scrunchie
Week 4 - Using a tape measure
Inches & Centimetres
Sew an Envelope cushion cover
Week 5 - Sew a door blocker
This project involves work with sand as well.
Week 6 - Sew a placemat and decorate it buttons. This projects involves both machine and hand sewing.
Week 7 - its a Thumbelina or a Tom Thimble week with needles, thimbles, cottons & rips !
Children will be learning how to mend a rip in a garment as well as sew on a hook and loop. We finish off this week by sewing a book cover
Week 8 - Basic trouble shooting of a sewing machine. Skipped stitches, loose stitches, puckering of fabric while sewing
Week 9 & 10: A recap of all that was taught and a surprise project will be completed in these last two weeks.
We wind of this last class for this term by sewing a surprise project.
By the time children complete their term of sewing, they learn how to....
  • Take in a hemline
  • Mend a rip in a garment
  • Hand sew on a button & (manual) button hole
  • Sew on hooks and loops
This will help, make children independent not just for a day or two but for the rest of their lives.
Give children the opportunity to learn a practical life skill.
Please note--- parents are not allowed to wait in the class. It's a drop off and wait in your car if you want to wait until your children complete their classes.
