Carbon Sewing — Clone Your Favourite Dress 

 

Course length: 8 weeks

Session length: 2 hours per week

Level: Confident to intermediate

Major project: Clone one well-fitting dress without taking the original garment apart

 

Course Description

 

Have a favourite dress that fits beautifully — but wish you had another one?

 

Carbon Sewing teaches students how to reproduce the shape and fit of an existing dress by carefully transferring the garment's construction, seam lines and dimensions into a new sewing pattern.

 

Students work with a dress they already own and learn how to examine its construction, identify the individual pattern pieces, trace those pieces accurately, add the necessary sewing allowances and markings, test the resulting pattern, correct the fit and finally sew their own cloned version.

 

The original dress remains intact throughout the process.

 

By the end of the eight weeks, each student should leave with:

- their original dress intact

- a complete pattern cloned from that dress

- a toile/test garment or fitting sample

- an adjusted master pattern

- a completed cloned dress

- the knowledge to apply the technique to other suitable garments

 

✂️ 8-Week Course Structure

 

WEEK 1 — Understanding Garment Cloning

 

Students are introduced to the principles behind Carbon Sewing and learn how an existing garment can be translated back into pattern pieces.

 

Students learn:

> what Carbon Sewing is

> which garments are suitable for cloning

> recognising front, back and other pattern sections

> identifying darts, seams, panels and shaping

> understanding grain direction

> examining necklines and armholes

> identifying closures such as zips, buttons and elastic

> recognising facings and linings

> assessing the original dress before beginning

 

Practical activity:

Students conduct a complete Garment Analysis of their chosen dress and sketch its construction.

 

WEEK 2 — Carbon Transfer & Cloning Techniques

This is the foundation week for your actual Carbon Sewing method.

 

Students learn:

∆ preparing the dress for accurate copying

∆ positioning the garment correctly

∆ using carbon/tracing materials

∆ transferring seam lines

∆ working section by section

∆ transferring curved areas

∆ recording darts and shaping

∆ locating centre front and centre back

∆ checking measurements against the original garment

 

Practical activity:

Begin cloning the main front and back sections of the dress.

 

WEEK 3 — Completing the Pattern Pieces

 

Students continue extracting the remaining components.

 

Depending on the individual dress, this may include:

sleeves

bodice panels

skirt panels

yokes

waist sections

pockets

collars

cuffs

facings

straps

waistbands

other design components

 

Students learn how apparently complicated garments can be broken down into manageable individual pattern pieces.

 

Practical activity:

Complete the initial cloned pattern.

 

WEEK 4 — Turning the Clone Into a Sewing Pattern

Now the transferred shapes need to become a pattern that can actually be used.

 

Students learn:

trueing pattern lines

checking adjoining seams

correcting curves

adding seam allowances

adding hem allowances

marking notches

marking grainlines

labelling pattern pieces

marking cut-on-fold pieces

transferring dart markings

checking pattern measurements against the original dress

 

Practical activity:

Produce the student's Carbon Sewing Master Pattern.

 

WEEK 5 — Toile / Test Garment

 

Before cutting into the student's chosen final fabric, the pattern is tested.

 

Students learn:

• selecting appropriate test fabric

• economical pattern placement

• cutting accurately

• transferring construction markings

• assembling the toile

• establishing an appropriate sewing sequence

• temporary construction techniques

• preparing the garment for fitting

 

Practical activity:

Cut and construct the first test version.

 

WEEK 6 — Fit, Compare & Correct

 

Students compare three things:

Original Dress → Cloned Pattern → Test Garment

This is an important teaching week because it shows students that cloning isn't simply tracing a shape.

 

Students learn:

~ identifying where fit has changed

~ checking bust, waist and hip placement

~ checking shoulder position

~ neckline and armhole balance

~ sleeve fit where applicable

~ length and proportion

~ correcting gaping or pulling

~ making minor fitting alterations

~ transferring corrections back to the paper pattern

 

Practical activity:

Complete the final pattern corrections and create the student's Master Carbon Pattern.

 

WEEK 7 — Cut & Construct the Final Dress

 

Students now begin their finished garment using their corrected pattern.

 

Students learn:

> understanding why fabric behaviour affects the finished clone

> laying out the pattern

> checking grain

> cutting accurately

> transferring markings

> construction order

> seam finishing

> inserting the required closure

> assembling major garment sections

 

Practical activity:

Cut and begin constructing the final cloned dress.

 

WEEK 8 — Finish Your Carbon-Copied Dress

 

The final lesson concentrates on professional finishing and evaluating the completed garment.

 

Students learn:

 

+ final garment assembly

+ neckline finishing

+ sleeve/armhole finishing

+ hemming

+ pressing during construction

+ finishing seams

+ final fitting adjustments

+ quality checking

+ comparing the finished dress with the original

 

Final project:

★ Fashion fabric suitable for the cloned design

★ Matching thread

★ Zip, buttons, elastic or other closure as required

★ Interfacing if required

★ Lining if required

Over eight weeks, learn how to carefully clone a favourite well-fitting dress without taking it apart. You'll create your own reusable sewing pattern, test the fit, make the necessary adjustments and sew a new version of your favourite dress.

Please note: This is not a beginners level sewing. You will not be taught how to set up and use your sewing machine etc.
