Using a tatting needle and thread, you'll gradually learn to create decorative rings, chains, picots and beautiful lace motifs.

This beginner-friendly course starts with the absolute basics and introduces new techniques progressively, allowing you to develop your skills and confidence.

No previous tatting experience required!

Needle Tatting differs from Shuttle Tatting and offers another enjoyable way to explore traditional lace-making.

WEEK 1 – Introduction to Needle Tatting

Module 1: Getting Started

Learn about the essential tools, materials and basic techniques.

You'll learn:

• Understanding tatting needles and sizes

• Choosing suitable beginner threads

• Matching needle and thread sizes

• Holding the needle and working thread

• Understanding working and ball threads

• Creating the basic double stitch

• First-half and second-half stitches

• Maintaining comfortable tension

• Sliding stitches from the needle

Practical Activity: Double-stitch samples and your first simple ring.

WEEK 2 – Rings & Picots

Module 2: Building Decorative Shapes

Develop confidence with rings and introduce decorative picots.

You'll learn:

• Creating consistent rings

• Making decorative picots

• Understanding joining picots

• Controlling picot size

• Counting stitches accurately

• Reading basic stitch notation

• Closing rings correctly

• Recognising uneven tension

Weekly Project: Simple tatted flower or ring motif.

WEEK 3 – Chains & Pattern Formation

Module 3: Creating Lace Structures

Learn how rings and chains combine to form decorative lace.

You'll learn:

• Turning and positioning your work

• Following written instructions

WEEK 4 – Joining Techniques

• Connecting rings and chains

• Keeping joins neat

• Preventing twisting

• Correcting common joining mistakes

Weekly Project: Joined flower, medallion or decorative motif.

WEEK 5 – Reading Patterns & Building Motifs

Module 5: Developing Independent Skills

Begin following a needle tatting pattern with greater confidence.

You'll learn:

• Common tatting abbreviations

• Understanding stitch counts

• Identifying rings, chains and joins

• Following pattern repeats

• Planning thread requirements

• Adding new thread

• Hiding thread ends

• Maintaining consistent motif sizes

Weekly Project: Begin your final needle tatting project.

WEEK 6 – Completing Your Tatting Project

Module 6: Finishing & Presentation

Bring together the techniques learned throughout the course.

You'll learn:

• Completing your chosen design

• Reading patterns more independently

• Troubleshooting common problems

• Securing and hiding thread ends

• Shaping completed tatting

• Basic blocking techniques

• Presenting your finished project

Final Project: Complete a beginner-friendly lace project such as a bookmark, ornament, decorative motif or lace edging.

• Tatting needle set in assorted sizes

• Crochet cotton or tatting thread suitable for your needle

• Small sharp embroidery scissors

• Fine crochet hook for joins, if required

• Tapestry or embroidery needle

• Measuring tape or small ruler

• Notebook and pen or pencil

• Small project bag or storage pouch

Recommended Beginner Threads

Smooth, firmly twisted cotton thread is generally easiest when learning.

Suitable options include:

• Size 10 crochet cotton for initial practice

• Size 20 tatting or crochet cotton as skills develop

• Mercerised cotton tatting thread

Beginner tip: Choose light or medium-coloured threads so individual stitches are easier to see.

Avoid very dark, fluffy, metallic or highly textured threads while learning the basic techniques.
