With over 30 years of dressmaking experience, I'll guide you through the techniques step by step, with plenty of opportunities to practise on your own machine.

Getting to Know Your Overlocker

• Identifying the parts and functions of your machine

• Understanding how an overlocker forms stitches

• Threading the upper and lower loopers

• Threading and changing needles

• Understanding the cutting mechanism

• Adjusting stitch length and cutting width

Overlocking Techniques

• Basic overlocking stitches

• Sewing curves and corners

• Rolled hems

• Flatlocking techniques

• Circular and continuous overlocking

• Securing thread chains and finishing seams

• Working with different fabric types

• Adjusting differential feed

Machine Adjustments & Troubleshooting

• Understanding thread tensions

• Identifying and correcting tension problems

• Disengaging the cutter where supported by your machine

• Cleaning and maintaining your overlocker

• Basic troubleshooting and common stitching problems

Some functions and adjustments vary according to the make and model of your overlocker.

Workshop Fee: $240 per participant

Duration: Two sessions of approximately 2 hours each (4 hours total)

Skill Level: Beginner

Prerequisites: No previous overlocker experience required

Class Size: Maximum 5 students

Location: Rooty Hill, Western Sydney

Workshop dates and times are arranged according to availability and confirmed before attendance.

🧵 What to Bring

Your Overlocker

You must bring your own 4-thread overlocker, including:

• Power cable and foot control

• Instruction manual

• Long-nosed tweezers

• Small screwdriver or Allen key suitable for your machine

• Spare overlocker needles

• Four to five suitable cones of overlocker thread

Sewing Supplies

• Fabric shears

• Thread snippers or clippers

• Dressmaking pins

• Hand sewing needles

• Notebook and pen

Fabric Samples

Please bring a selection of fabrics cut into approximately 10–15 cm × 30 cm pieces.

Suggested fabrics include:

• Heavyweight denim or furnishing fabric

• Jersey knit or an old T-shirt

• Silky polyester

• Organza

• Fine crepe or lightweight fabric

These samples will help you practise adjusting your overlocker for different fabrics and finishes.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and overlocker owners who would like to develop a better understanding of their machine.

With a maximum of five students, you'll receive patient, individual guidance throughout the workshop.
